The BLACKFAST process was developed for safe and reliable use for the metal working industry, eliminating the need to send parts out. This inexpensive and convenient process for blacking iron and steel in house at room temperature is distributed by e-Black Solutions of Toronto, Canada.
The immediate benefits of this product are cost savings, no production delays, in
house quality control and flexibility. Blackfast is non hazardous, environmentally friendly
and easy to use.
Cost savings are afforded from low capital investment; plastic buckets will do. Short dwell
times allow rapid throughput of production without the wait of heat specific tanks and longer
dwell times characteristic of the traditional hot processes.
Product control is simple, replenishment is accomplished by topping up when the solutions become weak. The process is very convenient and requires no complicated ventilation or control procedures. The solutions are safe, reliable and easy to maintain.
A uniform black finish of steel components is extremely popular and adds considerably to the perceived value of the finished product. This combined with the unique quality that the component’s dimensions are not altered and a uniform color is achieved over blind holes and threads makes it an attractive proposition for any precision engineer.
What makes Blackfast the leader in Room Temperature Blacking? Developed in the United Kingdom over 22 years ago, Blackfast is distributed worldwide in every continent around the world and boasts clients like Sandvik, Kenametal, Pratt & Whitney, Land Rover, ISCAR Metals, Unova, ABB and hundreds upon hundreds of job shops.
Blackfast’s unique formula provides a consistent deep black finish every time in solutions that are near pH neutral. The competition’s cold black products are acidic at pH 1 to 2, on a scale from 0 to 14, where 1 is extremely acidic, 7 is neutral and 14 being alkaline. Blackfast’s blacking solution is at a pH of 4.2 making it much more worker friendly.
Blackfast is a lot less harmful and the tanks are easier to maintain than its acidic counterparts. There is no need to dump the tanks as is common to the other cold and hot processes on the market. The ongoing costs beat the competition hands down.
The process provides corrosion protection that surpasses that of the traditional hot black oxide method. The corrosion protection is afforded due to the holding ability of the microcrystalline converted surface. This microcrystalline black surface adheres applied corrosion inhibitors to the surface for a longer period of time. The effect is a long lasting humidity barrier which hampers oxidation.
There are 4 main steps to the Blackfast process separated with a 1 minute water rinse between each:
Clean 10 – 20 minutes
Condition 5 – 15 seconds
Blacken 30 – 60 seconds
Dewater/Protect 15 – 20 minutes
Doing your own blacking, in house, can eliminate the exorbitant costs related to sending it out, such as minimum charges ranging from $55 to $125 and transportation to and from the contract blacker. You will no longer have to worry about down time & production bottlenecks as workers wait for parts to return. On the assembly side, there no longer will be a need to re-machine, re-tap & clean parts of corrosive caustic salts from the hot process, stripping & rebuilding machinery, lost & missing parts, and loss of quality control will all be headaches of the past.
Blackfast could even blacken your bottom line!
