Record attendance, a new electronic newsletter for the electrical surplus and reconditioning industries, and 23 new electrical reconditioning standards marked the 12th annual Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League (PEARL) Electrical Safety and Reliability Conference recently held in Atlanta, April 18-20.

Attendance was up 10% over last year’s conference thanks in part to a strong technical training track on low-voltage motor controls and technical presentations from Underwriters Laboratory, the National Center for Remanufacturing, forensic engineer Prof. Helmut Brosz, OSHA, Eaton, and Siemens Energy and Automation. This year’s conference attracted 106 attendees, up from 99 in 2008, 11 corporate exhibitors. Membership is also up this year with 51 full voting members, up from 47, and 81 total members, up from 65 at this time last year.

PEARL Adds Electrical Standards, Seeks Input

In addition to minor ‘housecleaning’ changes to PEARL’s 137 electrical apparatus reconditioning standards, the PEARL board also accepted for consideration the Technical Committees latest standards revision. Revision 5 includes 23 proposed standards on a variety of devices, including disconnect and safety switches, relays, circuit breakers and electrical accessories. PEARL’s Technical Committee expects to address the association’s more than 100 Inspect & Test Standards for electrical devices during future revisions. Both sets of standards are available to the public for free at PEARL’s website http://www.pearl1.org/, however, the 23 newly proposed standards contained in Revision 5 will not be formally adopted until the following PEARL Board meeting this fall. All PEARL standards are based on the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) operating and repair manuals and reviewed by third party independent engineers.

New standards for medium-voltage switchgear and transformers are expected to be the highlights of Revision 6 of PEARL’s electrical reconditioning standards. PEARL’s Technical Committee is actively seeking volunteers with transformer expertise. Interested parties should contact PEARL at 1-877-287-3275, or pearl@pearl1.org.

PEARL formally launched their new electronic newsletter for the electrical surplus and reconditioning industry, PEARL $AFE, at its Atlanta conference. Interested parties can sign up for the newsletter on the PEARL website, www.pearl1.org.
